Wet carpet after a water loss

A household fan on wet carpet is how Orlando rooms grow mold under the pad. The face yarn can look dry while the pad is still a sponge.

Clean supply-line water on a small area, caught in the first hour, can sometimes be extracted in place. Once the pad is saturated, or the water sat overnight, the pad usually has to come out so the subfloor can dry. Sewage or toilet water means the carpet is a loss — see sewage cleanup.

• Do not stretch wet carpet back. It will cup and rot.
• Do not recarpet until moisture meters say the slab or subfloor is dry.
• Do not run a shop-vac if the water came from a drain.
